It took political resistance to end slavery, end school segregation, and provide equalities that White Anglo Saxons have been given. Famous political resisters include Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Che Guevera, each took different routes to attain social victory and each person had political detractors and political obstacles. Political resistance can take many forms and can be done by peaceful means and in subtle ways. Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning are two modern American political activists. Many artists, writers and musicians have utilized their social stature to disseminate social criticism and political resistance through pop culture and underground media. Government supported media and mainstream media corporations often use their power to minimize political resistance. Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson used their writings to convey societal resistance and cultural criticism in their day. The writings of the American Transcendentalists may have inspired real political resistors in later decades. There are thousands of musicians that have taken part in and inspired political resistance. The lyrics of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Sage Francis, Brother Ali, Bruce Springsteen, Ice Cube, Henry Rollins, Bob Marley and Rage Against the Machine are a few of the larger musicians/bands that have used the stage to inspire and ignite political resistance. Today there are dozens of music sub-categories that focus on activist lyrics and political resistance. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica is probably the most famous painting of modern political resistance, though there are many. Today the most famous political art critics include Shepard Fairey of OBEY and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Personally I was drawn to the artwork of German Expressionist, Kathe Kollwitz at the age of 14 because of the powerful societal movements depicted in her work. Famous women artists, Kathe Kollwitz and Frida Kahlo later went on to form the Guerilla Girls, a feminist movement pushing for equal representation in the modern art world.  The artwork of Emory Douglas helped the Black Panther party create a popular subculture, gain a visual identity and disseminate their political writings and influence.
